The performance of Burnley and Sheffield United this season has been particularly poor. Both only have 13 points and will enter the top 5 lowest ever EPL points total if they accumulate 19 points or lower.
Burnley are perhaps more interesting. Their net transfer spend this season is €-107.25m according to Transfermarkt. Sheffield United's net spend is 'only' €-36.05m
The chart below shows the relationship between seasonal points totals and a club's net spend only for those entering the EPL from the Championship. The data is from 2008 to last season. There is positive relationship here as one would expect, albeit not a strong one. Some of the most noticeable outliers are Nottingham Forrest (190m net spend for 38 points), Aston Villa (156m for 35 points) and Fulham (111m net spend for 26 points). Over the last few seasons these clubs incurred net spends north of 100m to not even reach the 40 point threshold. It's likely Burnley will join this group. Their board are patient.
