A recent piece in the New Scientist (here) claimed that the Chelsea team of 2005-6 were the best team ever (at least since 1888). The New Scientist piece is based on an article in the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society by Rose Baker and Ian McHale (here). Arsenal fans will point out that a team that goes undefeated for a league season surely deserves to be classified as the best team ever. Manchester United fans will claim that a great team is successful in both England and Europe. Opta provided the data.
