A couple of weeks ago Coventry City were trailing Millwall 0-1 when Coventry were awarded a penalty kick. Two Coventry players wanted to take the kick. They settled the issue with an impromptu game of rock-paper-scissors. Wright played rock and O’Hare played scissors – although Wright admitted to cheating a little by delaying his throw (see his comments in a post-match press conference here at 6 minutes 30 seconds).
Having won the rock-paper-scissors encounter with his teammate, Wright faced the Millwall goalkeeper. Instead of rock-paper-scissors, he had to decide whether to play left, right or centre. Looking at the video, it could be said that he again waited marginally before slotting the ball down the middle of the goal.
After the game, the manager of Coventry City afterwards said he would “have a word” with the players. There is something to be said for allowing players to sharpen their strategic skills using rock-paper-scissors – although things might get messy if both played the same strategy. In addition, Wright and O’Hare might have argued that they were only following the example of Toni Kroos and Frank Ribery from a decade ago (here).
