Recently Tottenham Midfielder Moussa Dembele suggested that Tottenham Hotspur's pitch is making it difficult to beat defensive-minded teams at home.
So, is it harder to score goals with smaller amounts of pitch space in the Premier League?
Below is a table that shows the pitch dimensions for Premier League clubs and ranks them by their pitch size (by area) alongside the amount of goals scored at each venue this season so far. Information on pitch dimensions was acquired from this season’s Premier League Handbook. 11 out of the 20 teams have the standard 7140 metres area, as per Premier League rule K.15 (Unless otherwise permitted by the Board, in League Matches the length of the pitch shall be 105 metres and its breadth 68 metres.)

Here’s a scatterplot of the relationship that throws up a correlation coefficient of 0.34 – a weak postive relationship…. I don’t think you can blame the groundsman just yet Moussa..!
