For whatever reason, there is no government minister interviewed in the report of September 23rd. Last Friday, three weeks after the original report, Drivetime returned to the story. The Minister for Agriculture, Michael Creed, was on the programme to discuss the aftermath of Budget 2017. Towards the end of this 11 minute interview, the presenter took the opportunity to ask the minister questions about the reappointment of Mr Kavanagh (listen to it here). The timing was opportune as the previous day the Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture had discussed the issue with HRI's Joe Keeling. It was in this context that the presenter asked the minister about the reappointment. After pointing out that HRI was going to get €64m from Budget 2017, Mary Wilson asked the minister three questions. Here are the questions.
1. Are you satisfied with the corporate governance structures in Horse Racing Ireland?
2. Were you aware that the board hadn't formally discussed Mr Kavanagh's reappointment when the chairman Joe Keeling told you that the entire board wanted him to stay on?
3. Did you consent to Mr Kavanagh's reappointment to a €247,000 a year position on the basis of this two-page letter?
It was an interesting interaction where both the presenter and the minister did their best to control the story.
