An examination of the 2015 Irish Sports Council, Sports Investment document makes for some interesting reading. Under the list of national governing bodies funded is the Irish Martial Arts Commission. No mention of the word "mixed" but it does make one wonder if there is overlap with MMA. Also receiving funding are boxing, wrestling, and ONAKI (Karate). It should not be too difficult to get to grips with MMA.
Other national governing bodies receiving funding include those dealing with Horseshoe Pitching, Baton Twirling, and Fencing. The Speleological Union of Ireland were given €9,700. You are probably in the dark as to what they do!!
While almost 60 entities receive funding through this channel, 42% of the funding goes to five of the NGBs. The top-5, in descending order, are Special Olympics Ireland, Athletics Ireland, Swim Ireland, Horse Sport Ireland, and Basketball Ireland.
If one was to consider the need for physical contact, as specified by the judge in the English Bridge Union case, then Mixed Martial Arts is surely a sport.
