The Department of Economics and the Centre for Sports Economics and Law at University College Cork recently hosted Professor Larry McCarthy, former President of the GAA (2021–2024), for a guest lecture on The Economic Impact of the GAA.The talk was held as part of the EC3219 - The Economics of Sport.
Professor McCarthy, who is Professor of Management at Seton Hall University, New Jersey, and an Adjunct Professor at UCC, shared insights into the role of the Association not only as Ireland’s largest sporting organisation, but also as a significant contributor to the Irish economy and to community life across the country.
His lecture explored the ways in which GAA activity generates economic value — from match-day revenues and volunteer engagement to wider social and cultural benefits. The session was both engaging and thought-provoking and gave students the opportunity to discuss the intersection of sport, economics, and community development with one of the GAA’s most recent President.
